Sovereigns were first struck at the Melbourne Mint Australia in 1872 and continued throughout Victoria's reign, Edward VII's and King George V. At this time Britain's empire was strong, and several mints were set up to meet demands. This sovereign was struck at the Melbourne Mint and features the first head of Victoria, horse with long tail and small B.P (Beneditto Pistrucci - the designers initials) and date.
